Do you have a problem with pronunciation? Do you know that word stress plays an important role in your pronunciation when you speak English?

Word stress is when one of the syllables is given more importance (stress) than the rest.

The stressed syllable can be:

  • louder
  • longer
  • higher pitched

For example:

  • SPEAK (one syllable)
  • SPEAking (two syllables)

So maybe you speak English well, but you apply stress on different parts of a word. This may make it difficult for someone to understand you.

In this week’s video, I talk about word stress and share words that are pronounced differently in British and American English due to word stress.
